HOW DID THE LOCKDOWNS AFFECT YOU?
Emotional, physical, financial stress
Emotional stress and health impacts:
Due to the lockdowns and mandates, with the fear and constant threats from government of fines and curbing my freedom to travel, engage in community activities and have social contact with friends/relatives, I have become socially isolated and have remained house bound for the past couple of years. The constant fear and stress of being fined, not being free to walk or travel locally without fear of being fined or arrested, the constant messages of needing to be vaccinated in order to have access to services, jobs etc made me too fearful to leave the house. I became so scared that my digestive health suffered greatly such that I became very sick, weak and emaciated. As a result, I am now severely limited in what I can eat and this has led to even further emotional pain.
Additionally, the emotional turmoil of the past 3 years has affected my mobility; my body became weak, I was unable to exercise and I was not able to participate in regular activities due to fear and anxiety of being confronted by police and discrimination from venues with mask and vaccine mandates.
I am currently in the process of rehoming my precious dog because I can no longer take her for a walk.
I have not been able to see a supportive doctor or attend medical appointments at hospitals due to mask mandates and vaccine requirements. I also had to cancel my private health membership as I was not able to use many of the services due to the services having mask mandates. Additionally, because some doctors were being suspended, I no longer trusted the medical profession to competently treat my health issues.
Death of a family member:
My brother, who was a diabetic, was taken to Canberra hospital in September 2020 due to diabetes complications. Because he was tested positive for ‘covid’. he was intubated and given remdesivir (according the FOI information requested by his wife) against his wife’s wishes.
I was unable to travel to my brother’s funeral in September 2021 due to border closures and vaccine “passports” required to travel interstate. Additionally, there were limited number of people (up to 10) permitted to attend a funeral at that time which greatly diminished our family cultural values of gathering to say goodbye to our loved ones. This was an emotionally shattering experience for me and his family. The grief I felt further affected my physical and emotional health.
Financial impact:
I came to QLD at the beginning of 2020 to work in my family’s business and because of the lockdowns, mandates and restrictions on small businesses, I have been unable to further my financial income as the business was severely curtailed in its ability to expand and prosper. I am now not receiving any payment from the business as there simply isn’t enough money to pay employees. My family invested in equipment and employing workers and had contracts lined up, all of which fell through over the course of the lockdowns and restrictions. This has had a huge impact on me and my family. It has been a devastating experience. We observed that bottle shops and tobacconists were allowed to remain open, but my family’s business suffered.
The impact of the family business being stifled meant that I could not expand my experience within the company, my role was limited and eventually became obsolete. This has affected our family dynamic as we are all dealing with the loss of dreams, hopes and potentially lucrative contracts. I have nowhere else to go due to my limitations with physical health and am now reliant on my family to support me.
